Ultimate Hospital Bag Checklist for New Moms

You can go into labor at any moment! You don’t want to be trying to pack in between contractions. Packing a hospital bag earlier will ease your mind so you can focus on your body and your baby. There are many hospital bag checklists available. However, this one will make sure you don’t over pack. You will only bring the essentials.

The hospital will supply some items. Here are a few things you will want to bring for your own comfort. Don’t forget to bring items for the baby as well.

Here is the ultimate hospital bag checklist.

Frida Mom Peri Bottle

The hospital will supply you with a peri bottle, but this one has a long neck which is much easier to use and maneuver. Just fill the bottle with warm water and spray to cleanse the perineal area.

Adult Diapers

Again, the hospital does provide mesh underwear however they are flimsy and you will still need to position a pad in them. Having some adult diapers on hand that are more secure will make you more comfortable.

Nipple Cream

Pack some nipple cream especially if you are starting to breastfeed. Your nipples will be sore and this nipple cream will soothe and moisturize them.

Pajamas

After delivery, once you’ve had a moment to rest, you may want to change into something familiar and comfortable. Pack some pajamas so you won’t be stuck in a drafty hospital gown.

Baby Outfits

You will need to bring some clothes for your new little one. Pack a couple onsies or cute outfits you may want to take some pictures in. Anything with a double zipper are the best options for easy diaper changes.

Toiletries

Don’t forget to pack your toiletries. I would try to keep this simple; toothbrush, toothpaste, skin care, shampoo, conditioner, lotion, and brush. You will be tired after delivery and will only want the essentials. I didn’t even bother packing make up. My focus was a shower and resting and baby!

Hospital Shoes

Pack some shoes you can wear around the hospital and especially in the shower. These are great because they are non-slip shoes.

Snacks

Depending on when you arrive at the hospital and how long you labor there, you will get hungry. Labor is hard work, so pack a couple of snacks to keep your energy up. Consult with your doctors first before eating, they may advise against eating depending on where you are in your labor process. At the very least having some snacks on hand will be good for your partner or after delivery.

Bottles

If you plan to bottle feed your baby you will need to bring your bottles with you along with a gentle detergent to clean them. These bottles are great because they have a sloped nipple. If you try breastfeeding, but feel more confident bottle feeding, these will help your baby achieve a great latch.

Formula

Again, if you plan to bottle feed you will need to bring some formula with you. This is a great organic brand that is Australian made. Kendamil is also a great formula to use as well.

Here’s all the newborn essentials you will need to welcome your baby home.

Going Home Outfit

Pack a cozy, comfortable outfit that you can wear out of the hospital. A lounge set, leggings, or a comfortable dress are great options. Remember you will be sore and still have a bit of a baby belly. Try not to bring anything too restricting like jeans.

Options Items:

Fan

I packed a fan in my bag, but did not end up using it. However, if you are someone who gets hot easily or if you think you will need it, I’d add it to your bag. You can attach this one to the hospital bed side railings to have it gently blow cool air to you.

Extended Phone Cord

This is an optional item, in my opinion, because I didn’t really use my phone while we were in the hospital. But, if you think you might need this for pictures or entertainment go ahead an pack it.

Now, you may be thinking, where’s the other postpartum products I need like Dermaplast or Tucks pads? The hospital will have these on hand as well as pads. I wouldn’t bother trying to pack all of these in your bag. Keep these items at home for when you return.

Don’t worry about packing everything under the sun. The hospital has a lot of postpartum care items and plenty of pumps. Stick to this hospital bag checklist. You will have everything you need to take care of yourself and baby!
